This article applies to US customers only.
The guided tax flow walks you through preparing your crypto taxes in CoinTracker — confirming your accounts, reviewing your transactions, importing your 1099-DAs, and generating the forms you'll file. It doesn't file taxes for you, but once the forms are ready, you can file them with TurboTax, H&R Block, or your tax professional.
Before you begin
A few prerequisites keep the flow moving and your forms accurate.
- Connect every wallet and exchange. Your tax forms are only as accurate as the data in CoinTracker. Add any wallet or exchange you haven't connected yet.
- Wait until all your 1099-DAs have arrived. Exchanges issue Form 1099-DA at different times. Starting the flow before every form arrives means redoing the 1099-DA step later.
- Check your plan. Depending on how many transactions you had in the tax year, you may need to upgrade your CoinTracker plan to generate tax forms at the end.
Start the guided tax flow
- Sign in to CoinTracker and select Taxes.
- Start your taxes from the tax prep checklist panel on the right side of the screen.
Step 1: Accuracy
The Accuracy step reviews your account for issues that can overstate your gains, such as sales missing cost basis. When the check finishes, you see one of three results:
- Healthy. Nothing needs fixing. Select Continue to move on.
- Minor. There is something you can improve, such as a flagged transaction, an account that needs attention, or a recommended account. Select Continue to move on, or open the first fix to resolve it now.
-
Critical. Your account has a larger issue affecting your gains. The headline reads Your gains may be higher than they should be, and the note explains that up to a given amount of your sales may be missing cost basis, so they could be taxed as if you paid nothing for them.
- Select Continue to open the fixes, or select Skip and file as is to file with your current data.
What fixes can appear in Accuracy?
When there is something to fix, the fixes run in a set order, and each one appears only when it applies:
- Accounts. Reconnect, resync, or reimport any account that needs attention. The flow does not include a CSV import option.
- Recommended accounts. Add any wallets or exchanges you may own that are not connected yet.
- Transaction review. For transaction review, you first see a summary card, then a transactions table filtered to the tax year and to the transactions flagged for review. When you finish, select Continue.
On a free plan, you reach the upgrade view at the end of the Accuracy step, before the 1099-DA step.
Why did a step or fix not appear?
Each fix appears only when there is something to fix, so a step you expected may not show up if there was nothing to resolve. For example, if nothing needs recommending, the recommended accounts fix does not appear.
Why are my numbers still updating?
After your last fix, the flow moves to Rechecking while CoinTracker recalculates your numbers. Most recalculations finish in about a minute, though large accounts can take longer. You can continue after a short wait, and your numbers keep updating in the background.
Step 2: Import your 1099-DAs
This step brings your Form 1099-DAs into CoinTracker and reconciles them against your imported transactions, giving you a single matched view that feeds your final forms. This step applies to US customers only.
You cannot complete this step until every exchange has issued your Form 1099-DA, and timing varies by exchange. To learn more about this, check out the article: How to use CoinTracker’s 1099-DA portal.
For what the form is and when to expect it, check out the article: What you should know about Form 1099-DA.
Step 3: Download your forms
The final step shows a summary of your taxable activity and generates the forms you file. Your forms sit in four tabs: IRS forms, Tax forms, Tax filing software, and CSV reports.
- Review your tax summary and confirm the numbers look right.
- Select Download tax forms. If you are prompted to upgrade your CoinTracker plan, complete the upgrade and return to this step.
- Download your forms once they generate.
Next, file your forms with your tax software or tax professional. For software-specific steps, check out the article: File crypto taxes with CoinTracker and TurboTax Online or File crypto taxes with CoinTracker and H&R Block.
Do I have to finish the 1099-DA step to get my forms?
No. Skipping the 1099-DA step does not block your forms. Once you reach the Download forms step, the tax prep card on your Taxes page shows as complete, even if you skipped the Accuracy or 1099-DA checks.
Where can I get more help while filing?
The Taxes page keeps the tax prep checklist panel and the Need help with your tax filing? card. From that card, you can book a call with a CoinTracker support expert. To learn more about this, check out the article: Schedule a call with a CoinTracker support expert.
